Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Receives $1M Endowment June 12 - After four years of generous grant support from the Bernard Osher Foundation, our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the U has been granted a $1 million endowment from the Foundation to help sustain our operations into the indefinite future. OLLI at the U is one of the truly exemplary organizations in the state for active learners 50 and over. U of U Awarded Endowment for Re-Entry Scholarships June 10 - The University of Utah was recently awarded a $1 million endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation to fund scholarship opportunities for students to return to their college studies after being away from school for more than 3 years. This initiative is a partnership between Continuing Education and University College in Student Affairs. The Osher Reentry Scholarship Program funds 25 scholarships for students from throughout the state of Utah with financial need between the ages of 25 and 50 whose collegiate studies were interrupted for several years and who now wish to resume their studies and complete a four-year baccalaureate degree. New Development Officer and Grant Writer Announced June 2 - Continuing Ed is pleased to announce that Jennifer Mabey will be the new Continuing Education Development Officer. Jennifer will help craft a strategy to meet our significant and growing development needs, and will also continue to coordinate the AMES Program (the Academy of Math, Engineering, and Science at Cottonwood High School). Jennifer has development work experience in a number of settings, and her familiarity with and passion for the important work done here will serve us well. April Cordova, former part-time Development Officer, will continue in a part-time grant writing position. Her expertise and familiarity with our mission will be invaluable as we move forward with a new, larger, development mandate. Distance Education Rolls Out More New Online ClassesMay 21 — Students may now enroll for two new online independent study classes: Anthropology 1020 and Teaching and Learning 5380. Online classes are an excellent avenue for students seeking flexible ways to finish their degrees. Students can enroll for online classes anytime, not just during official semester registration, and may take up to nine months to complete each class. Nonprofit Academy for Excellence Now Accepting ApplicationsMay 7 — Applications are now being accepted online for the fall class of the new Nonprofit Academy for Excellence. Applications must include a personal statement, resume or bio, and two letters of reference. Thirteen matching scholarships are being provided to eligible applicants. Applicants are encouraged to indicate their interest in being considered for matching scholarship funds as part of the application. MARCH 2007New Online Biology Class OfferedMarch 3 — New Online Biology Class Offered (BIOL 1210). Now online at the U for the first time, Principles of Biology provides four credit hours and an introduction to the unifying concepts in biology. Study includes how structure defines function, how energy and matter are used, how growth and reproduction take place, and how all of this is related. To register, visit the class page. New Outreach Program: Utah College Advising CorpsAcademic Outreach worked in collaboration with Continuing Education on a $1,000,000 grant which was recently awarded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to establish the Utah College Advising Corps. The Utah College Advising Corps is a university-based, state-wide college access program which will focus on reaching out to first generation students, students of color, and other students facing substantial barriers with regard to the necessary steps to enter an institution of higher education. The goal of this program is to encourage all Utah high school students to participate in the various higher education opportunities available to them through the state's nine colleges and universities. Founded on the idea that all of Utah's students should have an equitable opportunity to be prepared for and succeed in a college or university, mentors will guide high school students through the test preparation, application, and financial aid process to ensure that Utah's high school students understand that higher education is accessible and is an attainable goal. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Expands to BountifulFor the first time ever, the Osher Institute is holding seven classes in the U of U Bountiful Campus location at 75 East 200 South for its spring term, which began April 2. University classes have been held at the historic Stoker School since 1981. The Bountiful campus offers free parking and a central downtown location for Osher members, and is easy to find from I-15. The spacious facility includes 17 classrooms, two study rooms, a gymnasium, two ceramics studios, and a computer lab with 22 computers. Technology Education Offers CCNA Training for Spring 2007CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Networking Administrator, a highly sought-after certification for computer network professionals. CCNA Boot Camp is an intense learning experience spread over 40 hours of training that combines instructor-led education with hands-on laboratory exercises. Students leave Boot Camp fully prepared for the CCNA certification exams. Passing the CCNA certification exam proves the student has a firm foundation in the most important components of the Cisco product line—routers and switches.
